I find Harvey’s explanation of social labor quite helpful beginning at minute 22:30. He says that “social labor is immaterial because it is a social relation. Social relations are immaterial, but objective (He takes this idea from pages 7-8 of Marx’s Capital, volume 1). Marx’s materialism is historical materialism. The history of it is the social relation.”
